On April 12, 1961, Lord Astor of Hever, England, direct descendant fo John Jacob Astor from whom this city of Astoria derived its name 150 years ago, dedicated this monument to transportation. From here members of the Astor Expedition blazed eastward to St. Louis, the route that became there Oregon Trail. This point marks a center to transportation routes west across the vast Pacific, north and south along the Pacific and east by the Columbia River into the heart of the United States.
Harry M. Steinbock, Mayor
