O'Neal Moore (1931-1965) and his partner, David "Creed" Rogers were the first black deputies of the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office. June 2, 1965, the deputies were ambushed by alleged members of the Ku Klux Klan in a drive-by shooting resulting in the brutal murder of O'Neal Moore and wounding of David Rogers; leaving him blind in one eye. Moore left behind a wife, Mavella Moore & 4 daughters: Tressler, Regenia, Veronica, and Sheronda Moore. (Continued on other side) (Continued from other side)
This was one of many incidents that activated the Legendary Deacons of Defense of Bogalusa, Louisiana. The same Deacons that would later protect the remaining members of the Moore family. Moore, Rogers, and many others made grave sacrifices to help ensure success of the Civil Rights Movement. The O'Neal Moore Murder Case remains unsolved.
