Negley's Division

—Thomas’ Corps —

Beatty's Brigade
Negley's Division - Thomas' Corps.

September 20th, 9:30 a.m., 1863

104th Illinois - Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Hapeman.
42d Indiana - Lieutenant Colonel William T. B. McIntyre.
88th Indiana - Colonel George Humphrey.
15th Kentucky - Colonel Marion C. Taylor.

Soon after reaching this position, the 88th Indiana on the left of the road and the 42d on the right of it were struck by Adams' Brigade of Breckinridge's Division, advancing over the low ridge to the northeast, while 104th Illinois and the 15th Kentucky to the right and rear were attacked in front and on both flanks by Stovall's Brigade and a portion of Helm's Brigade. The Battery concentrated on the west of the road in the edge of the woods and opened fire. The left of the Brigade was forced off the field to the west. The right was rallied by General Beatty in the woods south of the Battery, and upon the arrival of Stanley's Brigade was formed by him in its rear and directed to conform to its movements. While General Beatty was himself advancing with Stanley's line, an officer of General Negley's staff ordered General Beatty's regiments off the field towards Rossville. Two guns of the Battery were captured the rest retired to the vicinity of the Snodgrass House, and were at once

ordered to Rossville by General Negley. General Beatty accompanied Stanley's Brigade to Snodgrass Hill and assisted in the defense at the front until the close of the battle. Strength in action 1,324: killed 17; wounded 189; missing 104; total 310. Percentage of loss 23.48.
