Buckner's Corps

—Major General Alexander P. Stewart —

Stewart's Division - Buckner's Corps
Major General Alexander P. Stewart.
September 20th, 1863, 10 a.m.

Bate's Brigade — Brigadier General William B. Bate.
Brown's Brigade — Brigadier General John C. Brown
Brown's Brigade — Colonel Edmund C. Cook
Clayton's Brigade — Brigadier General Henry D. Clayton.

This Division having penetrated the Union line as far as the Dyer field in its advance the evening of the 19th September, retired before the approach of troops sent from right and left to the assistance of the Union center, and bivouacked to the left and rear of this position. It was formed on the 20th upon this ground, with Bate's Brigade on the right somewhat refused, Brown on the left and Clayton in the rear.

At 11 a.m., in connection with Wood's Brigade of Cleburne's Division on the right, the line attacked the Union position south of the Kelly field and west of the Poe house. The line was received with a terrific fire of artillery and musketry, and after reaching the Union rail works west of the LaFayette Road was repulsed and withdrew to the ground from which it had advanced. About the middle of the afternoon the Division moved a short distance to the front and right and faced the Union line south of the Kelly Field. Just before sunset the Division advanced,

passed over the log and rail works from which Reynold's and Palmer's Divisions had withdrawn, captured a number of prisoners, and bivouacked near the Kelly House. Total strength in action, 4,398; killed, 205; wounded, 1,499; missing, 29.
Total during the battle, 1,733. Percentage of loss, 39.4.
