September 20, 1863, 11 a.m., 1st Position.

58th Alabama - Colonel Bushrod Jones.
37th Georgia - Lieutenant Colonel Joseph T. Smith.

37th Tennessee - Colonel R. C. Tyler, Lieutenant Colonel R. Dudley Frayser, Captain R.M. Tankesley.
20th Tennessee - Major W. M. Shy.
Eufaula (Alabama) Battery - Captain McDonald Oliver.

The Brigade by a partial wheel to the left, from its refused position on the right of Brown's Brigade came onto this ground which had been occupied by Wood's Brigade of Cleburne's Division, and followed it into action. Brown's Brigade on its left advanced with Wood's, and Clayton moving up from the rear of Brown advanced on the left of Bate.

The fire was heavy on the whole line from Brannan's line in front and Reynolds' on the right. Wood being repulsed, Bate advanced beyond the LaFayette Road, and was finally checked by Connell's and Croxton's Brigades of Brannan's Division at their breastworks on the west line of the Poe Field. Bate and Brown were then withdrawn to

the line from which they advanced and remained there until 5 p.m. when they received an order to advance toward the Kelly Field. Although the attack by this Brigade of Stewart's Division was repulsed, it was a very vigorous and determined one.
