The Battery with its Brigade crossed the Chickamauga at Dalton's Ford about 9 a.m. It conformed to the movements of the infantry in its advance, and about 1 p.m., under a bitter fire of musketry and artillery, came into action on this ground, on the left of the 38th Tennesseee which regiment was also the left of the Brigade and Division. The firing was at close quarters, only canister being used. While the Battery was engaged in front, with no support on the left, it was attacked by a force of the enemy extending around the left and rear, with horses killed the guns could not be moved; the men were hastily assembled by the bugle, and taken out at a double-quick by the right and rear, leaving the guns to be possed by the advancing Brigade of the enemy. The guns were soon recovered by the advance of Stewart's Division. Casualties—out of an aggregate of 76—1 officer killed; 37 men killed or wounded; 49 horses killed.
