Historical Site No. 4
This parcel of property is historically important for several reasons. The home of Frederick Denny Larke was located along the Third Street side of the lot. Larke was one of the founders of Rogers City and a successful businessman with diverse commercial interests. He had extensive land holdings throughout the county and was active in the lumber business. He also operated a general store across Huron Avenue from his home, was founder and publisher of the Presque Isle County Advance, and operated the village's first telephone company. He also lobbied steadily to get the Detroit & Mackinac railroad to extend its lines into Rogers City and worked tirelessly to recruit someone to set up limestone mining operations where Calcite is located today.HM Number | HM2BQJ |
