Historical Site No. 4

This parcel of property is historically important for several reasons. The home of Frederick Denny Larke was located along the Third Street side of the lot. Larke was one of the founders of Rogers City and a successful businessman with diverse commercial interests. He had extensive land holdings throughout the county and was active in the lumber business. He also operated a general store across Huron Avenue from his home, was founder and publisher of the Presque Isle County Advance, and operated the village's first telephone company. He also lobbied steadily to get the Detroit & Mackinac railroad to extend its lines into Rogers City and worked tirelessly to recruit someone to set up limestone mining operations where Calcite is located today.
The small log cabin shown in the photo was located at the rear of Larke's property. The Advance was located in the cabin at one time and Charles Osgood's Presque Isle County Bank, the first bank in the county, operated out of the same log cabin from 1890 until 1899.
The Presque Isle County Historical Museum provided sign text and images. A Vibrant Small Cities Initiative (VSCI) grant from MSHDA and the City of Rogers City funded this project. The City Council and Community Development Authority jointly obtained the VSCI grant. The Design Committee developed the concept.

Sign design and engineering by Harry Wierenga of Fleis and VandenBrink Engineering. Valley City Sign manufactured the signs in 2010. The Department of Public Works installed the signs in 2011.
