Regis High School
55 East 84th Street

Opened in 1914 by the Jesuits to provide a tuition-free liberal arts education to gifted Catholic men, Regis High School is an imposing five-story Classical Revival limestone building designed to harmonize in scale with the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola across the street. Designed by a Boston firm that specialized in work for Roman Catholic institutions, the architects planned the building around a central courtyard to provide the quiet and seclusion deemed desirable for effective education. The high school, designated a New York City landmark in 1969, demonstrates the successful adaptation of Classical design to a modern building, and is one of the most dignified school buildings in the city.
