The Oberkoetter Building
—1867 · Francis Oberkoetter —
Francis Oberkoetter, a prosperous shoe manufacturer from Hanover, Germany, built this Italianate "Oberkoetter Business House" building in 1867. His son-in-law operated the Mackenzie Hotel and Dining Room on the second floor. After becoming owner of the building, Mackenzie sold it in 1894 to H.B. Denker for $7,500, a low price that reflected his sizeable bill to Denker for groceries. Rumor has it he had spent the hotel profits "while dissipating gambling".HM Number | HM2CC2 |
