Comanche, an Indian mustang ridden by Captain Keogh,
Seventh U.S. Cavalry, was named for the Comanche Indians,
from whom he was captured. The buckskin horse proved
dependable under fire and was ridden by Keogh during
the ill-fated Battle of the Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876.
When "Custer's Last Stand" had ended, only one survivor
of the Cavalry unit was found- Keogh's horse, Comanche.
General Custer's forces, including Keogh and his faithful
mount, Comanche, spent the winter near here in 1874.
