This is part of the Morrison Formation accumulated around 150 million
years ago. Monsoonal (seasonal) rains caused flooding which dotted the terrain
with small lakes, ponds, and braided streams. These served as watering holes
in the drier times. This part of Colorado may have had a climate much like that of
the savannah in Africa today.
This present day map shows the wide distribution of the Morrison Formation in
North America. Many of the major Late Jurassic dinosaur quarries are in
Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, as the key shows below.
