Two amusement parks developed on the Maryland side of the Potomac in the 1890s: one for blacks, and one for whites. Notley Hall was owned and operated by African-Americans. Black residents from Washington, D.C., visited the park called by one newspaper "a collection of attractions unsurpassed by any place of amusement on the river." Just to the south, River View, the whites-only park, featured a roller coaster and picnic grounds. Both parks were abandoned by the 1920s.

[Captions:]
Six Flags America in Largo got its start in 1973 as a wildlife preserve by Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot and a pair of Irish animal trainers.

River View Dance Pavilion — once open-air, now converted into a home — is still visible from both water and land.
