The "Town of Damascus" was founded in 1816. This marker stands on one of the original 14 lots laid out by the founder and first postmaster, Edward Hughes. The earliest part of the town was located in the southwestern corner of "the Pleasant Plains of Damascus," a 1,101-acre tract patented by Matthew Pigman in 1774.
