—USC — University of Southern California —

The Board of Trustees of the University of Southern California met for the first time on September 3, 1880, culminating years of efforts by leaders of the Methodist Episcopal Conference of Southern California. The Board accepted the gift of this land from civil leaders Ozro W. Childs, John G. Downey, and Isaias Hellman and elected the Reverend Marion McKinley Bovard as the first president of USC,his ministerial appointment to this position being made September 4 by Biship I. W. Wiley. During the next forty-one years, three of USC's first four presidents were ministers of the Conference. In commemoration of this vision of the USC Board of Trustees, the Methodist Conference, and enlightened public spirited leades, this plaque is placed this 28th day of July, 1992.
