During the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, Sailing Master Almy commanded the schooner Somers. He skillfully maneuvered his ship to engage the smaller vessels in the British fleet. After the battle he remained in Erie where he contracted pneumonia, succumbing to the infection in December 1813.
