Jesse Duncan Elliott (1782-1845) was born in Maryland. Originally a law student, he joined the US Navy and was a midshipman in 1804. Promoted to lieutenant in 1810, he was placed in command of the brig Niagara during the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. After the Lawrence was destroyed and Perry boarded the Niagara, Elliott was sent to the rear of the American squadron to direct the smaller gunboats into closer action. In October 1813 Elliott succeeded Perry as commander of naval forces on the Great Lakes. For his actions on Lake Erie he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal. Master Commandant Elliott continued his naval service by commanding the sloop Ontario during the Second Barbary Wars.HM Number | HM2FOP |
