97 Bowery

NYC Landmark Of Cast Iron
97 Bowery
You are standing in front of an Italianate-style NYC landmark that was built in 1869 for the carriage manufacturer John P. Jube & Co. Its façade is constructed entirely of cast iron, a mid-to-late 19th-century architectural material popular in the city because of its low cost, strength, durability, supposedly fireproof nature, ease of assembly and parts replacement, ability to provide inexpensive ornament, and paintable surfaces.
Designed in imitation of masonry, 97 Bowery's large, arched window openings provided much-needed daylight and ventilation for the factory's workers. The John P. Jube Company, which closed in 1935, was one of the city's longest-running carriage manufacturers. It is a reminder of the significant role that horse-drawn carriages played in the everyday lives of 19th century New Yorkers.
