John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (1923-1968) was one of Indianapolis' elite jazz musicians. Montgomery began playing in the bars along Indiana Avenue and was an active improviser. He played in a vast range of styles despite having no formal musical training or being unable to read sheet music. He played with the best-known jazz musicians of the post-World War II era, working day jobs as a welder to support his family. Montgomery's early 1960s albums won widespread critical praise winning a Grammy in 1966 for Best Jazz Instrumental for "Going Out of My Head."
