Mary Burchard Orvis (1880-1964) came to IU in 1916 to work for the Indianapolis Center of the Extension Division as an executive secretary. She became an assistant professor of journalism and the "officer in charge" of the Center in 1921 holding that post until 1945. Her students included Joseph Hayes, author of The Desperate Hours, and children's book author Laura Long. She was responsible for one of the earliest student activities at the Extension. In the spring of 1936, she organized "Free Victoria Concerts" which were intended to present good classical music for the students.
