Shortly after John Heisman's birth in 1869, the Heisman family moved to Titusville where his father, Michael Heisman, was an oil investor and cooper.
John Heisman was educated at Titusville schools and
played varsity guard on the football team, class of 1887 He played collegiately at Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania before becoming a coach in 1892.
His greatest coaching accomplishments were at Georgia Tech, leading the team to three consecutive undefeated seasons.
The inventor of the forward pass, center snap, quarter format and more, John Heisman is honored yearly with the awarding of the Heisman Trophy to the most outstanding college football player.
