In 1914, Thomas and Hopewell Phinny of Oil City created Phinny's Quaker State Medium Oil. The Phinnys were granted a trademark for Quaker State in August 1921.
Quaker State was financed and marketed by J.B. Berry Brothers of Oil City. The Berry's family farm was Windy Hill Farms, located 2 miles south of Titusville.
Together the Phinnys and Berrys created the Eastern Refining Company. Over the next two decades Eastern reorganized to form Quaker State Oil Refining Corporation and produced lubricating oils.
They also acquired a second brand named "Sterling Oil" which marketed both oil and gas products.
Quaker State was headquartered in Oil City until 1995. After merging with Pennzoil in 1998, the brand is now
owned by Royal Dutch Shell.
