The Penn Drake brand was originated by the American Oil Works of Titusville.
Michael Heisman (John Heisman's father), Frank VonTacky, William Teege, and Louis Walz created the American Oil Works in Titusville in 1885.
Pennsylvania Refining Company (aka Penreco - founded in 1878 in Karns City, PA), took over American Oil Works in the late 1920s and continued using the popular Penn Drake name. Plants were operated by Penreco in Titusville, Karns City, Edgewater, New Jersey, and Louisiana.
Penreco continued producing under the Penn Drake name until 1948.
In 1973, Penreco was acquired by Pennzoil.
