Barberville Pioneer Settlement
The log cabin is the only building at the settlement that is not original to Florida. Jim Lewis of Georgia built it in 1876. In 1992 his descendants purchased the cabin and sponsored it's transportation and reconstruction. It is an excellent example of Cracker Vernacular architecture. Built up off the ground and having steeply pitched roof allows air movement up through the structure. There is no center ridgepole. Originally, the wide porches would have encompassed three sides to shade the interior from the hot sun. One ridge end was enclosed for a storeroom. It has been re-purposed as a kitchen. The original kitchen was a separate building behind the cabin.| HM Number | HM2I02 |
