Here, in the late 18th Century, the Cherokee had a tollgate, where they exacted tribute from travelers between the Watauga Settlements and the Cumberland country. Here James Glasgow, John Hackett and Littlepage Sims arranged with Talootiske, of the Cherokee, for the lines of the Indian Reservation and the town of Rockwood boundaries. The tree blew down in 1925.
