About 14,000 years ago, the last glacier receded
from this area. Mastodons, mammoths, and giant
beavers, roamed the region. The ancestors of
American Indians arrived in Ohio during this time.
These Paleoindians were hunters and gathers. By
800 BC, the indigenous people had become farmers
and were using pottery. With the arrival of Europe-
ans in eastern North American, native cultures
were devastated by disease and warfare.
