Dick's Brigade - Van Cleve's Division

— Crittenden's Corps —

7th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery
4 10 Pounder Parrotts, 2 Napoleons.
Dick's Brigade, Van Cleve's Division, Crittenden's Corps.
September 20, 1863.

Captain George R. Swallow, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Otho H. Morgan.
1st Lieutenant John C. Fislar,(Captured).
2nd Lieutenant George M. Repp.
2nd Lieutenant Columbus S. Pound.

The Battery took position with Van Cleve's Division early in the morning on slope of Missionary Ridge west of this position. The Division advanced to the front followed by the Battery, which took position in rear of the infantry in the open field; was soon ordered by Major Mendenhall to move to the left and when near this position halted for further orders: taking position a little retired. The enemy then opened a heavy fire of musketry in front. The infantry soon fell back and the Battery opened on the enemy's assaulting column composed of one brigade; the fire of the batteries on this line, though very rapid, failed to check them. They reached the guns; when with difficulty the battery retired in great haste and much confusion, leaving Lieutenant Fislar, one sergeant, one man and one gun in the enemy's hands. Formed in rear of this position but did no firing, and retired soon after noon with troops under General Negley and encamped

near Rossville at night. casualties: 1 officer missing; 8 men wounded; and one parrott gun.
