Croxton's Brigade

— Brannan's Division —

Battery C, 1st Ohio Light Artillery.
4 James, 2 Napoleons.
Croxton's Brigade, Brannan's Division, Thomas' Corps.
September 19, 1863.
1st Lieutenant Marco B. Gary, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Hiram W. Turner.
2d Lieutenant Thomas King.
2d Lieutenant Jerome B. Stephens.

After an all night's march from the vicinity of Morgan's Ford on the Chickamauga via Crawfish Spring, the Battery with its Brigade arrived at Kelly's house soon after daylight, and about 7 a.m. moved in the second line of the Brigade to the front and took position in a small open field. The infantry moving to the front into the timber, engaged the enemy who was in heavy force. Twenty minutes later the Battery moved to the front, but finding the infantry already falling back, it came into position on this ground and threw a few shells at a high elevation for effect only. Three successive times during the day the Battery was ordered into position in the face of the enemy, and each time, the infantry being driven back, was ordered to the rear. About 4 p.m. the Battery followed the Brigade to the right and bivouacked for the night in the Dyer field. Casualties for the day: 1 man severely wounded, 1 horse killed.
