Thomas’ Corps

— Brigadier General Absalom Baird —

Baird's Division - Thomas' Corps.
Brigadier General Absalom Baird.

1st Brigade - Colonel Benjamin F. Scribner.
2nd Brigade - Brigadier General John C. Starkweather.
3rd Brigade - Brigadier General John H. King.

(September 19th, 1863, 10 a.m.)

About 9:30 a.m. Baird's Division, skirmishing heavily, reached this position from Kelly's field. The line faced Southeast, King's Brigade being across the road. Scribner's well to its right and Starkweather's in rear of King's. Starkweather was sent to relieve Croxton of Brannan, then fighting to the left and front, and short of ammunition. About 11 a.m. Baird's right flank was vigorously assaulted by Liddell's Division and after desperate fighting Scribner was forced to the left and rear with the loss of five guns, one of which was afterwards recaptured. King was driven to the left, over Brannan's line with the loss of his Battery, afterwards recaptured by the 9th Ohio. Brannan's line held its ground, and after fighting had ceased at 2 p.m. was withdrawn to the high ground half a mile east of McDonald's house where Baird's Division had also assembled. About 5 p.m. Scribner and Starkweather were sent forward to the ground over which they had fought in the morning and formed on the left of Johnson then holding an advanced

and isolated position. At dusk, while in the act of withdrawing, these troops were assailed by Cleburne's and Cheatham's Divisions and fell back slowly, fighting heavily, and bivouacked east of the Kelly field.
