Smokehouse / Strong House

This building was originally used as a Smokehouse, as indicated by its smoked and charred beams, and was gifted to the Historical Society in 1964. It originally stood at Belvoir Plantation on the Horn Point Road near Cambridge, and was owned by the Woolford family. The building was moved to Cambridge at the corner of Locust and High Streets sometime after 1856. Over the years, it was also used for secure, locked storage of household goods, hams, sugar and other valuables where they could be locked away, resulting in its other name, "Strong House."

Helen C. Barber Herb Garden

This colonial-style herb garden demonstrates the many uses of herbs, both practical and aesthetic. It is divided into four sections: herbs for fragrance, herbs for beauty, herbs for medicine, and herbs for cooking. Planted in 1981 and maintained by the Dorchester Garden Club, the garden was renovated in 2004 thanks to a generous donation from Mrs. Elizabeth H. Robinson.

This garden was certified in 2006 as a Bay Wise demonstration landscape promoting healthy Chesapeake Bay by the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service.
