Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
The U.S. Lighthouse Establishment built two cottage-style lighthouses in 1892—one in Chesapeake Bay waters at Maryland Point on the Potomac River and one in Sharkfin Shoal on Tangier Sound. Each of these was equipped with not only a lighted beacon, but a fog signal—typically a large bell—for when the light could not be seen. Cast in Baltimore in 1892, this bell may have been intended for one of these new lighthouses.HM Number | HM2JZB |
