— V Bottom —
Penguin represents a once-numerous class of V-bottom boats known as Hooper Island launches, draketails, ducktails, or torpedo-sterns. Many were built on Hooper Island, Maryland, in the 1920s and 1930s; hence the name. The launches were characterized by their narrow hulls and reverse-rake to the stern. Penguin was built in 1935 by Harvey Hurley of Wingate, Dorchester County, Maryland. Owners J.C. Lore & Sons Co. of Solomons used her for general service and charter boat fishing. After 1952, she was converted to a small oyster buyboat, in which guise she appears today.HM Number | HM2K49 |
