— Flat Bottom —

This large, flat-bottom, oyster-tonging skiff was built by Ruby Dixon at Olivet, Maryland, in 1948. From 1959 until its donation in 1990, the skiff was owned by Melvin Owen Grover who used her to hand-tong for oysters in the Patuxent River. The boat is in the style of the local "taking-up skiff," used to tong seed oysters planted on the leased beds. She is currently fitted with a converted 1957 Chevrolet six-cylinder truck engine.

Restoration of the Grover skiff was made possible thanks to funding provided by Mrs. Ruth G. Dixon, Mrs. Eva Squires, and Mr. Melvin Grover.
