Johnson's Division

— Longstreet's Corps —

McNair's Brigade
Johnson's Division, - Longstreet's Corps.
Brigadier General Evander McNair
September 19, 1863, 3:30 p.m.

1st Arkansas Rifles, (Dismounted) - Colonel Robert W. Harper.
2d Arkansas Rifles, (Dismounted) - Colonel James A. Williamson.
25th Arkansas, - Lieutenant Colonel Eli Hufstedler.
4th and 31st Arkansas and
4th Arkansas Battalion, Consolidated, - Major J. A. Ross.
39th North Carolina, - Colonel David Coleman.
Culpeper's (South Carolina) Battery, - Captain James F. Culpeper.

Upon reaching this ground the 39th North Carolina abd the 25th Arkansas came forward to the front line in a charge, and, passing over the left of Gregg's Brigade, drove the left of Heg's Brigade before them, and pushed on to a point about 200 yards west of the LaFayette Road. From this position these regiments were forced back by an enfilading fire from a portion of Wilder's infantry and a section of his battery on the west side of the Viniard field. The rest of the Brigade was operating farther to the right in conjunction with Johnson's Brigade. After the arrival of Harker's and Buell's Union brigades from Lee and Gordon's Mill the Brigade retired about sunset into the forest east of Viniard's.
