Built on the site of the historic Washington Canal, Canal Park is three blocks of vibrant urban space with seasonal ice skating, interactive water fountains, and larger-than-life sculptures. Historically, the park draws its name from the Washington City Canal. From 1815 to 1850, the Washington City Canal connected the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers via the National Mall. In the early 1900's, the canal was paved over to create Canal Street. Ownership of Canal Street was transferred to the DC government and utilized for several interim purposes including a parking lot for school buses. In 2000, developer WC Smith secured the site to oversee development of the park. Canal Park opened in 2012 with elements reminiscent of the Washington Canal such as a linear rain garden and three pavilions that recall once-common floating barges.| HM Number | HM2M63 |
