Elbridge Gerry was a 1762 graduate of Harvard and a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Vice President of the United States. Gerry served as a representative from Massachusetts to the First Continental Congress, and on July 4, 1776, he signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1786, he retired to service as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He presided as a chairman of the committee that produced the Great Compromise. But ultimately, Gerry refused to sign the Constitution because it lacked a bill of rights. He did agree to support the Constitution, and was elected to the First Congress under the new national government, and served in the House from 1789 to 1793.
