As Deputy Commissary General of Issues for Georgia and South Carolina, Colonel Sheftall was the highestranking Jewish officer in the Revolutionary War. Captured by the British in the Battle of Savannah, Dec. 29, 1778, Sheftall was imprisoned for two yearsat Antigua and later released in an exchange of prisoners.
