Commemorates the Action at Tarrytown
which occurred near this spot
on July 15, 1781
and also the heroism of
Colonel Sheldon and Captain Hurlbut
of the Second Regiment of Dragoons,
Captain - Lieutenant Miles
of the artillery,
and Lieutenant Shaylor
of the Fourth Connecticut Regiment,
who received the particular thanks of General Washington
in the Public Orders of the Army, for their
"Gallant behavior and splendid exertions" on that occasion.
