Lancaster's native son, Civil War General WilliamTecumseh Sherman, was a four star militarygenius. He played a major role in the Unionvictory during the Civil War as a brilliant commanderand grand strategist who revolutionized war byincorporating psychological and economic warfareinto his military tactics, culminating with thefamous "March to the Sea" through Georgia. Inretrospect, he declared "War is Hell." Honoringan allegiance to the United States Constitution,he fought to preserve the Union. His self-written epitaph was "Faithful and Honorable."
