Paine College was founded as Paine Institute on this spot in 1882 by black and white members of the Colored (now Christian) Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (now United Methodist Church). Ths institution, founded to educate and empower recently emancipated slaves, embodied an intellectual mission, a commitment to interracial harmony, and a vision ot the social order. Since its inception, Paine College has maintained a legacy of achievement among its thousand of graduated.
