During the 19th and early 20th centuriesthis area was the business, social andreligious center of Darien. The powerfulBank of Darien with branches in five citiesoperated here until 1842. Prominent merchantsand timber barons lived in homes aroundVernon Square when Darien was one of theworld's leading exporters of Pine Timberfrom 1870 to 1910. The Methodist andEpiscopal Churches on the square wereboth established in the 1840's.
