The driving of aGolden Spike completed the firsttranscontinental railroad. Climax of adramatic railroad-building race between the Union Pacific building from the eastand the Central Pacific building fromthe west. This event symbolizedattainment of a long sought goal - adirect transportation route to thePacific Ocean and the China trade. Andit achieved the great political objectiveof ending together, by iron bonds theextremities of Continental United States,a rail link from ocean to ocean."
