— Here Ohio Loyalty Responded to the Summons"Remember the Maine" —
To establish a camp of general rendezvous for the Ohio National Guard and other Ohio troops, the citizens of Columbus offered to the State of Ohio Bullitt Park, now a part of Bexley - President William McKinley, April 25 1898, through Governor Asa S. Bushnell issued the first call to arms, to which 428 officers and 8,052 enlisted men responded. In answer to a second call 75 officers and 6,801 men volunteered - The first troops arrived April 28 and were mustered into service May 7-14. From the total number of 15,334 officers and enlisted men were formed nine regiments and one battalion of volunteer infantry, one regiment of volunteer cavalry and one battalion of volunteer light artillery.HM Number | HMB22 |
