The site of Greeneville was ajuncture of two Indian trails, andthe presence of the Big Springfurnished a stopping off place forthe weary Indian traveler. The Scotch-Irish pioneers made thespring the reason for the foundingof Greeneville in 1783. As early as 1780, the Rev. Samuel Doak preachedto the settlers at this spot.
