S.C. State University was founded in 1896as the Colored Normal, Industrial,Agricultural & Mechanical College of S.C. with itsorigins in the Morrill Land Grants Acts of1862 and 1890 providing for land-grant colleges. Intended "for the best educationof the hand, head, and heart of SouthCarolina's young manhood and womanhoodof the Negro race," it became S.C. StateCollege in 1954 and S.C. State Universityin 1992.

South Carolina State has been called "atleast symbolically, the most importanteducational institution in black Carolinasince its founding." Students were alsoactive in the Civil Rights Movement ofthe 1950s and 60s, taking part in sit-ins, the Orangeburg Movement of 1963-64seeking desegregation of downtownbusinesses, and the OrangeburgMassacre in 1968.
