Inscription
This causeway was built between January 1845 and November 1846 by Robert Francis Withers Allston, who owned a summer residence on Pawleys Island. Known as Governor Allston's bank, it connected the island to the mainland. Allston was a large property and slave owner in the area, and was governor of South Carolina 1856-58. The causeway and contiguous property remained in the Allston family until 1901.
The causeway was used by the Atlantic Coast Lumber Company as the roadbed for the Georgetown & Pawleys Island Railroad, which was constructed in 1902 to bring ACL employees to the island for recreation. The causeway and railbed were destroyed by a hurricane in 1906. Travelers came by steamboat from Georgetown to Hagley Landing on the Waccamaw River and rode the train four miles to Pawleys Island.
