The old oak tree is among the last of several large trees on the Bethel United Methodist Church property. These large trees, some dating to the period before the Civil War, have been witnesses to the many activities and changes at Bethel. These trees provided shelter and shade to both the church members and to the horses and mules used to provide transportation in the time before the automobile.
