West Side
This brigade, excepting the 78th New York, left on picket, crossed Lookout Creek, about 9 a.m., November 24, 1863, at Light's Dam, forming the centre of the first line of battle, consisting of Geary's Division. After advancing about two miles, part of Walthall's Mississippi Brigade was confronted behind breastworks, about 80 rods in rear of this position. A sharp engagement followed. Battle-flags, a number of prisoners and two abandoned guns were captured. The brigade advanced under fire around the northern point of the mountain and across this plateau to a position about 100 yards beyond Craven's House, where line of battle was halted, at noon, and re-aligned; the 60th New York resting up the hill; the 137th New York in front of the house; the 149th New York to the left and extending down the slope and the 102nd New York skirmishers to the left of the 149th New York.
The left was attacked about 1 p.m., by Moore's Alabama Brigade, which was repelled by the 149th New York skirmishers, under command of Capt. Lewis R. Stegman, and a part of one regiment of Whitaker's Brigade. The formation continued until 3 p.m., when the brigade was relieved by other troops.
