and The Battle of Tallasehatchee

At this site, on Nov. 3, 1813, after the Battle ofTallasehatchee, known then as Talluschatches, during the Creek Indian War,Gen. Andrew Jackson found a deadCreek Indian woman embracing her livinginfant son. Gen. Jackson, upon hearing that theother Creek Indian women were planning to killthe infant, as was their custom when all relationswere dead, became himself the protectorand guardian of the child.

Because of his compassion, Gen. Jackson tookthe infant to Fort Struther, in present dayOhatchee, where he nursed him back to health.Gen. Jackson then took the baby to his familyhome, the Hermitage, in Nashville, Tenn., wherehe and his wife Rachel named the child Lincoyerand adopted, raised, loved and educated him astheir son.

Lincoyer fell ill and died of Tuberculosisat home with his family, when he was 16 years old.The General and his wife mourned the loss oftheir son for the rest of their lives.
