1845 — 1971

Kentucky Military Institute, the nation's oldest private military preparatory school, wintered here from 1933 to 1970.

The campus consisted of the Venice Hotel (now Casa de Venice) which housed first year cadets, faculty and dining rooms; and the San Marco Hotel (now Venice Centre Mall) housed upperclassmen; class rooms and administrative offices (now mall shops).

The infirmary and school staff were located in the annex between both hotels. The armory (now Venice Little Theatre) contained the military offices, gymnasium, and rifle range.

On this field, Sunday full-dress parades were witnessed by thousands each year, the viewing stands were located to your right.

The Institute graduated thousands of young men who went on to serve our nation in both military and civilian roles. They have become living vessels of the Institute's guiding principle, "Character Makes The Man."

The alumni of K.M.I. are eternally grateful to the people of Venice for their warm hospitality to the Corps. We forever cherish K.M.I.'s winter home in our memories.
