Burke's Garden is named for James Burke whosurveyed the region with James Patton by1750. According to tradition, Burke buriedsome potato peelings in the region's fertilesoil during a survey expedition. Sometimelater another group camped at the same siteand discovered the potatoes, resulting in thearea becoming known as Burke's Garden. Burkebuilt a cabin nearby and lived here from about1753 until 1756 when hostilities began duringthe French and Indian War. Burke's Garden isa topographically rare elongated basin rimmedentirely by the Garden Mountain.
